Speaker Biography
Paolo Pelosi, Università di Pisa, Italy
Paolo Pelosi is a chemist working on the biochemical aspects of olfaction. In particular his main interest is on soluble proteins of chemical communication, such as odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), that he discovered in vertebrates in the early eighties. The experimental work in his lab is focused on structural and functional aspects of OBPs and involves identification, bacterial expression, synthesis of mutants, ligand-binding studies and immunolocalization of these proteins, both in vertebrates and in insects. In collaboration with Krishna Persaud, he has also prepared the first sensors for odours based on conducting polymers. At present, his research includes the use of OBPs and specifically designed mutants as biosensing elements for the monitoring of food and environmental odours.
